Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
