Britain's heavyweight contender is set to be promoted to WBO heavyweight champion after Usyk chose to vacate his world title

This development comes after Usyk notified the WBO he would not proceed with a mandatory title defence against the British challenger

Boxing Organization's Position

The WBO stated that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his title after thoughtful consideration"

Usyk still holds the multiple world titles, having defeated Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in the summer month to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion

He initially achieved the four-belt undisputed champion in May 2024 by defeating the British champion, before giving up the IBF title a month afterwards and choosing to avoid the mandatory challenger

Title Reign

Usyk secured the WBO belt in 2021 by beating the British star and went on to defend it four times

In summer, the championship body required discussions for a required title defense against interim champion Joseph Parker, only for a Usyk's physical issue to require rescheduling of the contest

New Champion's Path

But Wardley, took the interim title from the New Zealander with a major surprise in the later stages at the capital's venue in the previous month and was mandated to face Usyk before the end of September

The WBO is yet to officially confirm the British fighter's elevation but his manager Warren believes it is a formality
