The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
