Tropical Storm the storm is projected to strengthen into a rare highest-level hurricane as it turns in the direction of Jamaica, delivering life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.

This weather system, which had winds of up to 120 mph as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean region and is expected to hit the coast by Tuesday, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Warnings of electricity outages and damage to infrastructure have been announced as Melissa produces up to 76cm of rainfall and storm surges as high as 13ft above typical tides. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been urged.

Melissa is the thirteenth hurricane in the current Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in late autumn.

A Category 5 hurricane is the strongest type, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

Although Melissa is projected to diminish in strength to a category four hurricane before reaching the island, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon reaching the coast, and that the storm will be "just as powerful" when it hits the country.

"Several days of harmful winds and intense precipitation have begun and will cause severe and deadly rapid water accumulation and multiple mudslides," advised meteorological officials.

The nation's leader the official stated: "I realize that there are numerous residents who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and rightfully so: concern is justified.

"But the most effective method to handle nervousness and any apprehension and concern is to be prepared."

Locals are being advised to protect their properties with sand barriers and plywood sheets, and to gather basic necessities.

Wider Effects

Alerts are also active for parts of Haiti including the primary urban center, the neighboring country and Cuba's eastern region, where this storm is anticipated to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Landslides presently generated by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Expected Trajectory

The hurricane is predicted to cross Cuba by the middle of the week before passing across the Greater Antilles and emerging into the Atlantic.

By the time it makes contact with the Caribbean nation, it is predicted to have weakened to a Category 3 storm.
