This episode commenced with a single photograph, perhaps the most significant ever captured of a member of the monarchy.

Present was the Duke of York, with his arm around a female youth, while another individual beamed conspiratorially in the rear.

Without that snapshot, captured at a party in 2001, few would have credited the allegations of a teenager who declared she was transported across the ocean and obliged to have cursory relations with a individual of the royal bloodline?

A strange, telling gesture by someone who had publicly stated to have never heard of her, claimed he could not have had intimate contact with her, and yet provided a substantial sum of his mother's resources to settle a long-delayed court action.

Years of Disgrace

Considering this, talk of the royals acting firmly to sever ties with Andrew are inaccurate. This scandal has endured for the largest portion of 15 years since that photograph, and an additional snapshot of Andrew walking amiably with a notorious individual emerged.

• Self-importance: For what duration did his siblings, possibly even his mother and father, know that Andrew was so presumptuous?
• Questionable Associations: They must have understood, if his employees and the police were fulfilling their roles, that he had some highly questionable associates given he publicly welcomed them to palaces.
• Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the household did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his extravagance with state resources.

Travel were printed in official documents: private aircraft travel from the royal residence to a country club and back again in time for lunch, exclusive air travel instead of regular transport, all for the convenience of "the travel enthusiast".

Existence of Entitlement

Furthermore the presumption which expected subservience when he walked into a space or the extreme obsession about his royal titles used on his correspondence in communication to his associates.

He could get away with it while his matriarch, who unaccountably indulged him, was still living. The Queen did at least remove him of public duties and honorary colonelcies in the wake of his catastrophic and, it is now clear, untruthful public statement six years ago.

Current Situation

It was only in the last 14 days that events accelerated, following the publication of biographical works giving more troubling information of his actions and that of his associates.

Further disclosures have again revealed Andrew's thinking that he could escape deceiving about his relationship with a disgraced individual.

People (and the journalists) were far in advance of the royals. There was not a single person of any significance to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of hubris.

Institutional Fears

The more intelligent royals realized that. The key objective is to transfer the monarchy, if not as previously at least intact and unstained.

They have spent the last 190 years trying to undo the legacy of previous monarchs, demonstrating they are valuable, accountable and reactive to their people.

He was placing all that in peril in an era when respect and privacy is no longer adequate.

Aftermath

Finally, the famously hesitant king was pressured more. There was no other option. The palace had lost control of the account.

Presently the loss of designations and the persistent and life-long personal shame that will pain Andrew most severely.

• Downgrading: Reduced to just a commoner
• Historical Precedent: The first member to surrender his designations in recent history
• Armed Forces: Notably stinging given his service in the conflict

He continues to be a counsellor of state, theoretically able to stand in for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the monarchy, but neither of these will truly come to pass.

Coming Developments

Can persons he encounters still acknowledge him? Could they still make mistakes and call him Your Highness? Might they say Andrew,

Naturally, he is not retiring to a common area, but to the monarchy's vast grounds at a royal residence.

At that location, he will be supplied by the king with one of the grace and favour houses and given some type of private allowance.

This differs from his former home, where he paid a token lease for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit distant, but even so it may not be adequate distance.

Unresolved Issues

This is not over. There are still files in the hands of American legislators to be revealed.

No more deception that Andrew was acting willingly. And, significantly, the concise communication showed plainly that the institution were supporting the victim's account of incidents.

Even more, for the initial instance they eventually showed consideration for the victims: "The measures are judged required, regardless of the reality that he continues to deny the allegations against him."

In the end it is entitlement, selfishness and indolence that will destroy the monarchy. In his stupidity, personal excess and venality, Andrew seems never to have grasped that reality.
