A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
