International Committee of the Red Cross Assists Hamas in Recovery for Bodies of Captives in Gaza

A Red Cross official confirmed that its personnel accompanied members of Hamas into zones of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by Israeli military authority to support the search for the remains of individuals held captive.

Truce Terms and Hostage Bodies Return

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on 10 October, Hamas is required to return the remains of all Israeli hostages promptly. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has agreed to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

Hamas has to date handed back the remains of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the past five days, as a portion of those remains are believed to be in areas past the ceasefire boundary designating the temporary truce line.

She added: “Those involved to the conflict determined the modalities of the mission and delegated the Red Cross to act as a impartial mediator. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

She additionally explained: “Our team was did not participate in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the physical recovery of remains.”

US Ultimatum and Regional Recovery Operations

This development was corroborated by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that Hamas representatives had been allowed to enter sections of the region under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to search for the remains of captives, together with Egypt’s and ICRC teams.

“To achieve this goal, Hamas members were allowed to cross the yellow line,” the official was cited as saying.

Video released by a media outlet appeared to show individuals of a specialized group – part of the organization’s military wing tasked with guarding hostages – accompanying a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location close to Rafah, which is beyond IDF jurisdiction.

Challenges in Finding Hostage Remains

The search for the remains of individuals taken captive has become one of the most sensitive issues in the ceasefire agreed between the two sides. Yet, the attempt to find the remains has been difficult from the outset, given the existence of an approximate enormous amount of rubble across the strip, where, according to health officials, at least ten thousand Palestinians are recorded as unaccounted for, trapped under the rubble.

Conflicting Statements on Body Whereabouts

The group has stated it lacks information on the precise whereabouts of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with a number of its units that had been holding the hostages and were reportedly killed during Israeli bombardments.

In contrast, an official representative claimed that Hamas was aware of the whereabouts of the bodies. “If Hamas exerted greater effort, they would be able to recover the remains of our captives,” the spokesperson said.
