Citizens have come together across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed formal memorials until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the proposal.

A senior Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.

The representative said the morning session ended without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He noted that the talks are "difficult and have still not produce any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Talks

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war administration of the territory

Citizen Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until each abducted person are released no one will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.

Outside the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester a participant stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now consistently show that around the majority of the population desire the hostilities to end in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the music event, mourners assembled to pay their respects.

From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"Once the evening comes, the dread arrives with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, described.

"We are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Every second we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."

Health Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area reported two more victims had been brought there. One of them was died by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south, medics stated.
