Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

New York police issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
