Putin Pledges Continuous Energy Supplies to the Indian Nation in Rebuff of American Pressure

During a clear statement to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “uninterrupted” shipments of energy resources to India. This declaration came during a summit where both heads of state met in New Delhi and affirmed their relationship were “immune to outside influence.”

A Message Aimed at the United States

Putin's comments, delivered Friday, was widely seen to be targeted at the United States and its allies, that have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into reducing its close links with Moscow. The backdrop follows previous Washington's moves, including the imposition of trade penalties targeting New Delhi due to its buying of discounted Russian crude.

“Russia is a dependable supplier of oil and gas and all needed for the advancement of India’s industry,” the Russian president stated. “Russia is prepared to keep ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of energy for the booming Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, though he did not referencing crude directly, echoed the sentiment by noting that “energy security has been a robust and crucial foundation of the bilateral partnership.”

Challenging US Interference

Prior to the talks, via a TV appearance, Putin had questioned American pressure over India's energy purchases. He argued, “Should America has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India enjoy the same privilege?”

The visit was his initial trip to India after the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations made a deliberate show to demonstrate that the friendship between the heads of state remained intact.

A Personal Greeting

Taking an rare step, Prime Minister Modi met Putin upon his arrival. The two shared a warm hug like old friends before enjoying a private dinner the night before the summit.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “founded on shared respect and deep trust.”

Reaffirming Bilateral Ties

The meeting resulted in multiple important deals across military and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the signing of an strategic roadmap aimed at 2030, which aims to increase twofold mutual trade to one hundred billion dollars per year by the 2030 deadline.

The leaders also pledged to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia continues to be India's primary supplier of arms, this role has declined over the past decade as India has sought broaden its procurement.
