The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit series reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room reflected on the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

One could easily to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, why mess with the classics?

“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
