The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
