The Gruesome Animated Film Ending That Lingers Audiences
Out of all the adult-oriented animated films I have personally viewed, no other has remained with me quite like the dread-soaked ending of a viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based filmmaker crafted a dark, bleak , frequently brutal world with several minor , desolate hints of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it came from a desire to push animation even more, the director stated that it was actually an effort to communicate a universal, multicultural message about “the common origin of each battle.”
That message is expressed by means of a group of vividly colored bears , openly inspired by a popular line of lovable figures.
Maturing in a society focused on warmongering and the war machine, many of these animals are obsessed with killing unicorns, thanks to a religious scripture which states them they previously were rulers of the woodland, until the horned beings drove them out.
A few have not completely fallen for the brainwashing, , would rather experiment with drugs and engage sexually in the woods.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these bright beings display sexual organs and definite libidos.
For one particularly cruel, skeptical animal, Bluey, the war against the unicorns transforms into a route toward dominance — and specifically to authority above his gentler, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , a seeming sociopath , and while fear dominates his group and takes his teammates one by one, he seizes progressively influence on his own behalf, in increasingly violent, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are suffering their own horror, as a growing, deadly beast in their forest.
“In the early stages, it appears as a humorous movie,” the director said. “Yet it becomes a more intense and melancholic film. And in the finale, it transforms into a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars starts out feeling a bit like one of the most whimsical features by a renowned animator, which find a mischievous joy in letting cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Subsequently it turns into something more like a more grim work from that creator, including ever more explicit brutality , a palpable connection to the actual suffering of conflict.
By the end, it’s a full-on extreme drama massacre.
The terror that makes this a Halloween-friendly movie kicks in a lot earlier than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore gorehounds, for fans of graphic films who wish to watch a movie they’ve never seen on-screen before, and are able to withstand a plot that offers absolutely no punches.
See it in a dimly lit space without any distractions, and the finale will burrow into your mind and stay with you.
